| XIPHOIDS | | Xiphoid, also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, is a class of bladed weapons with a dagger like blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband or bracer sheath.Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and similarities to the Pata, short punching swords, which results in the blade sitting above the user's knuckles. |

| Not free...but cheap!!! 220 piece Spring assortment... 2 bucks!!! http://www.hoppymart.com/component/option,com_virtuemart/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,43/category_id,6/vmcchk,1/Itemid,1/| Quote: | | i dont want to buy a $50.00 sword online just so i can take one of the blades apart, you know | Done it! I gutted my 'Sword of the Daywalker' and cut it in half for two blades.
Check out BudK for really cheap knives and swords.
But when it comes down to it...it always seems better to make your own. Check out 'Texas Knifemakers Supply' when you're ready to start cutting out real blades. ATS34 or 440C comes in lengths of 12inches....12/24/36...etc. Cut up with Dremel tool._________________ Shut up and build something!! | Firstly Welcome to the Forum! Glad to have you on board As far as my experience goes I have the most time spent making full-tang fighters and survival knives using stock removal, and doing a bit of forging. I can personally vouch for Texas knifemakers. They are a great company and I have ordered a lot of stuff from them and have never been disappointed. After you take a look around the site and see some of the designs that these great guys have come up with you should have a very thorough understanding of the basic mechanics and principles but please don't hesitate to ask as you design! If you put up a picture or drawing/schematic that you have it will help us help you even more. I highly recommend building up your junk pile as well....starting now! Just run to the nearest thing and take it apart! I rarely have to buy parts because I have collected bits of mechanical esoterica and detritus my whole life. Comes in great when you need a part. Just hit the junk boxes My Xiphoid build now consists of a Blade from Texas knifemakers that I bought years and years ago, and a bunch of parts that I had laying around that just seemed to fit together. So in short SINZA is absolutely on the dot as usual ( and thanks for the tip on the springs buddy! ) Again welcome and should you need help with anything that you can't find here just feel free to ask anytime! | My junk pile is building every day, every chance i get to take something...i take it. My wife thinks im crazy And sinza...on that site you gave me for the springs, are they reliable? They dont seem like a legit site but if youve ordered from them before then i trust your judgement...And another thing, they say they only have 1 in stock, so do you know any other sites that sell cheap asssorted springs That are good? Ive looked and the cheapest ones ive found are like $8.99 for a box of 200 assorted springs. And that doesnt include shipping costs. I really dont want to pay almost 20 bucks for just one box. But if i have to i guess ill just resort to that. Down where i live, at all our hardware stores....its 3-5 bucks for just one spring. Pretty rediculous after seing boxes of like 200 for less than 10$ _________________ ....Always Under The Gun.

| I 'm looking at a 220 piece assortment box that I think I paid something like $6-$8 dollars for. I just gave you the cheapest link. Most of us on here collect junk, so asking us to part with it probally won't get you much. Any hobby has it's price. All depends how serious you want to get into it. I've spent hundreds of dollars on tools/materials/parts and I'm still just a hacker. Making knives and armblades is not the cheapest hobby. You need tools and you need materials. If you can scrounge stuff that's great, but at some point you will find that spending some money to feed the hobby will save time, materials, and frustration....and time is money. You can profile a knife blade with a file, a belt sander is faster. But you have to buy it and feed it belts. A Dremel tool will do wonders, but you need to buy tips and feed it wheels. A drill press is always better than a hand drill for straight holes. If cheap is the way to go than a Dremel work station will give you a basic drill press, but very limited. I also consider myself a poor boy, but I spend hundreds on any armblade that is sold retail, mostly so I can pick apart the design, hundreds on tools and materials, just so I can try to do better. As with most things in life, you get what you put into it. No matter what I buy I still seem to make trips to the hardware store for one thing or another. I also seem to be doing more online shopping, just seems to be the way to find just what I'm looking for and at the best price. Looking for springs? Googgle it and click on the 'shopping' tab to see what's out there. Figure out how much you can afford to spend feeding the hobby. But one thing to remember is.....work smart. I have all kinds of crap...tools, materials, etc....and Bill showed us all up by building one of our best rigs out of stereo parts!!! It's all in how you use what you have. Or a better way to put it...Do the best with what you've got. I'm rambling now......need sleep! _________________ Shut up and build something!! | Alrighty thanks, so to file a knife from scrap i just need some files and exactly what type of sheet metal? Aluminum bends real easy, so i make a knife from that to see and get an idea, and then when i want to make the real knife what type sheet would i purchase? And does the dremel cut the steel sheet metals or do i later need to buy a new saw? Again, the stupid questions im asking i apologize for but like i said on my other post i never knew how to use any tools. _________________ ....Always Under The Gun.

| Hey Agoraphobic, Welcome, well, it seems everyone has got you on the right track, so i'll just throw my little tuppence in... Sinza's pretty much nailed it, most of us have all kinds of junk lying around, however we all have some idea in our heads of something we may eventually want to use it all for, so your best bet will be to start building your own junk pile... It's not that hard. And it's also cheap. When stuff breaks, we don't throw it away, we take it apart, and store the parts we think we might eventually use. I think most of us do that. But eventually we still have to buy stuff. Aluminum is a great starting material for stock removal blades. For real blades, I can tell you, there are a gazillion places that sell really, really, cheap knives with reasonably good blades that you can salvage. Sinza made the excellent suggestion to go to Budk. http://budk.com/default.aspThey are actually one of the first place I started buying knives from, specifically because they were really cheap. Just look around a bit. And they aren't the only ones. There are lots of places on the web that sell dirt cheap knives. Find what you like, and Google is your friend. If you want to make a knife yourself, yes, a dremel will cut steel plate, though you will need to get good reinforced cutting disks, not the cheap little ones. Steel wise, a good place to find cheap (free) knife makeing steel, is to look for old files, old circular or band saw blades. But if you go this route and use old scrap tool steels, just remember to cut slowly and keep it cool, so as not to ruin the temper. At least on the side that is going to hold the edge. Here's a link to a page with an excellent cheapo tutorial on knife making. http://www.hossom.com/tutorial/jonesy/And before you start anything, I always recommend you read as much as you can on the topic, and go slowly until you've got a good feel for what you are doing. Stay safe...! _________________ "Genius - One per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration." |

| Interesting link, they seem to be of the more commercial business supply type... Some others to try are OnlineMetals.com and metalmart.com I've always had good luck with OnlineMetals.com... _________________ "Genius - One per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration." |
