I love the sword, but don't have a Katana,
I have these El Cid type toledo soft metal high polish things, they're nice.
I'm buying a whole suit of stage armor piece by piece ( reject SCA parts )

I made a carved wooden KATANA orangecrate/yardstick type wood sword
with metal foil tape,
and I learned to tie / twist long flat shoestrings to get the diamond grip holes.
Strictly halloween costume stuff.

I've always wanted to try kendo, but never had opportunity.
and now I'm too old to lift my arms over my head fast.

Oww !
fudge, still can't

I carve wood well, I'll xerox some samples.
I want to carve a Katana handle out of selected woods.
I've already made a laminated hardwood blade, and stained it
so it looks like a hamon line.
I will put stuff on the scanner later. and post it.

Yeah, I'd like to see that. Actually I think it would look really cool to put a traditional Japanese braided cord wrap on am all wood tsuka... A while back I came across some pics of a really good looking katana, made in wood. I'm going to have to try that one of these days...

I made a straight blade Ninja-to in highschool wood shop. Square guard, wood scabbard, carved Dragons.
Had it for about 10 years. My nephew liked it so one day I gave it to him.
About a year later I was visiting and found it laying in the backyard with a bunch of other 'toys'.
Had been left out in the rain for who knows how long. Scabbard was cracked all the way down, handguard was broken.
Sad sight. Kind of wish he had taken care of it, wasn't ment to be a toy. Kinda wish I still had it.

Found those pictures I was talking about before

*Split from the Mug thread, didn't want to clutter the mug thread up with pics of wooden swords (however sweet they may be):

Some kid had them posted up on a gaming site a few years back. He was selling them on ebay. Dunno if he still around, but he made some sweet swords out of wood... Twisted Evil PhyreBlade

I used to make swords out of wood, but nothing this fancy, just cut down dowelling... LOL
It should be fun. And a lot easier than working steel... PhyreBlade

I read some where that wooden swords were used by island natives encountered by European explorers. The cutting edges were hardened using fire and could apparently amputate limbs quite effectively.

wow, I'm good with the carpentry, 3 years of experience making wooden weapons, but that is sweet! yipee

I don't usually like making weapons (even wooden ones) which i can't hurt someone with lol, but I am so tempted right now to go and try my hand at that!

Sorry Phyreblade, I forgot all about this, got sidetracked and forgot

quote Phyreblade
"Yeah, I'd like to see that. Actually I think it would look really cool
to put a traditional Japanese braided cord wrap on am all wood tsuka... "

here is a basic wooden blade katana, hanging from my basement ceiling.
It's so light , refridgerator magnets and some fishing line keep it in place.
I left the wood grain visible, I like it like that.
there's a fake hamon line, done with different stain.
I never did finish the handle, parts are in a box somewhere.
I carved my last name vertically in mock japanese font on the tang

second photo is a similar wooden blade katana, covered in metal foil tape
it has a simple kite string wrapped handle, varnished. brass foil covered tsuba,
you can whack things with this one, it's pretty strong, thick blade
but the wood grain one in first photo has a correct scale thickness blade
with an almost sharp edge, that would nick if you chopped something.

Right above it is a real mild steel home made short japanese shaped knife

and there's a turkey bone , possum skull Pterodactyl skeleton there too.
his wings are semi folded, nylon window bug mesh, all painted tan.
( you would not believe some of the weird stuff I've built.)
there's a japan beatle bass guitar back there, and a japan SG guitar, among the mess.

Wow... That top sword is absolutely beautiful... thumb up thumb up

And turkey bone possum skull Pterodactyl...? LOL

So far as believing all of the weird stuff you've built, You are one of the few people about whom I could honestly say, if you told me you made a hang glider out of toothpicks, fishing line and aluminum foil, and I'd believe you... Very Happy

He's been folded up, wingspan is about 42inches
had to hot glue his fingers back on for this photo,

he was once all black, but I hung him up high in a display
and he was too dark, so this color looked good from far away,
someday I'm going to repaint him better.

Fiberglassed a turkey breastbone to the back of a possum skull.
Saved turkey neck bones from about 5 turkeys to make a spine.
Leg bones arm the biggest turkey we had. Likewise with ribs.
The wing finger and arm bones are carved tree branches.
There is this tree/bush that sheds fronds every year, pick the leaves off
and the sticks have swelled ends like long slim fingers.
Used plastic boy scout bear claw necklace to make back leg claws.

I've been toying with the idea of making a vampire bat
except use a semi human skull ( 1/3 size skull model.)
but, too many other things to do . . .
