Welcome !

Hah,
I define wallhangers as old switchblades that are too valuable to be taken apart to be repaired.

If you use babelfish online translator, you can communicate with the non-english speaking members.
Except for Bill Sykes, his english doesn't seem to work in the translator.

Rick S... I disagree. The term "Wall Hanger" does not automatically imply low quality. There are quite a few reasons why a perfectly usable blade may become a wall hanger, and it isn't always because they are cheap or worthless... As Jerry pointed out, sometimes a piece is perfectly battle worthy, but it's antique qualities are too valuable to risk attempting a restoration. So it ends up as a display piece. Other folks only collect high quality swords that have been actually used in battle for their collections. Yet others collect high quality, battle ready swords just for the novelty of it, solely for the purpose of displaying them in a gallery or similar collection. These weapons all become "wall hangers" but are very far from being inferior... new guy 952350

And there are wall hangers of both types. But I'll also point out one of the the things I have learned about blades, indeed about weapons in general. Weapons are like people. There are the really, really, bad people and the really, really, good people. But most of us are in between. There is a much wider range of both than I think you realize... new guy 952350

ok I'll try to clear this up wall hanger is a term I use to discribe a peice of shit sword/knife/dagger thats sole perpose is to hang on the wall and look like a weapon and never cut or be swung or played with in any way just cause you put a real weapon on the wall cause its old or rare does not make it a wall hanger it makes it a vauleble weapon good examples of wall hangers can be found for sale all over the net at shady sellers in every nation or those shitty italian knock off switch blades out of china so a wall hanger is a blade with no other function in mind except looking like a real weapon and a real good weapon does not become a wall hanger just cause you put it up on the wall for safe keeping it's still a weapon

We all have our illusions in life...far be it from me to take away yours.

I will add this as my 2cents. I own and have owned cheap weapons, real weapons, weapon like decorations.

There are swords that are made to be used...real quality swords.
There are things that LOOK like swords that are made to be decorations (wall hangers) that could NEVER be used as weapons.

Then we have what I will call...'Cheap collector swords'...
These are made as cheap as possable to keep cost down. Many have cast handles, gaudy designs, impractical shapes.
They are kind of half and half....yes I'm sure they spend more time on the shelf or wall looking cool than being used, but most of these COULD be used.
Most have at least a 440 blade...which is fine with me...440 is good steel (if it really is 440) and most come fairly sharp.
The problem with most of the cheap swords I've owned or held is that the handles are crap. Cheap cast metal...breaks easy.

I'll say this though....I've handled many cheap swords that would kill you just fine. I had a $60 Katana that I bought one summer. I used it to clear a acre of sticker bushes teaching myself how to strike. Chips, sparks, scratches...I beat the crap out of that sword. ...and it still held together fine. Blade was far from perfect but it still held a edge. I miss that sword...I did so much with it. I would never had done any of that with a 'good quality' sword, but I was surprised how well my $60 Katana had stood up to beatings.

Nothing wrong with 'cheap collector swords'...sometimes it's the only way some guys get to have ANY sword. My 10yr old nephew just got his Black Belt, so I bought him a Katana. It was cheap and duller than a butter knife. Perfect for a child. He loved it and his Mom & Dad are happy I bought him a 'tame' version.

I don't plan on using my swords for much battle, so they can be a little less.

theres a whole market of entery level sub-$300 swords refered to as "beaters" maybe not as pretty as wallhangers not historic but made for cutting tatami or water bottles what ever stainless steel sucks for swords or and thing over about 30" because it becomes brittle and is subject to chromium migration that leaves stress fractures in the steel and subject to breaking w/o warning making them unsafe to the user and others around them the anatomy of the average low quality stainless steel sword is not pretty it's a portrait of coner cutting and half assing making it unsafe to even swing around in the yard they are likly to snap off at the tang and to quote another forum "becomes a spinning helicopter of death" a dangerous sharp blade spinning through the air so to try to put this to scale more to the auto-knife forum it's like comaring a belltrame or akc model to taiwan steel switch blade there in totally differant legues now when I say wall hanger I'm speaking about the crap the sword market is flooded with theese days

I agree with this guy 100% when it comes to swords. Although you can use 440 for a weapon, it is not good for a sword. Stainless is too brittle for length over... I think it was 14 inches. I forget. But swords are too long. And swords can usually stand sword on sword contact. Did you ever chop at your swords surface (Sinza)? It makes huge grooves with little effort. Carbon steel is whats normally used for battle ready swords. And the term battle ready means you can take it into battle against other swords. I have both stainless and carbon and chopped them together. the Carbon steel one had next to no marks, while the Stainless (440) had HUGE grooves.

i spent $482 on a katana that was made JUST for actual fighting.... i have had it on my wall for a year now, i used it once and it cut through a 3inch bambo mat like butter. i never had to use it but im shure it could go through an arm, a leg, maby through a head.
i guess u could call the a "wall hanger" but leme tell ya, the only reason it stays up there is i dont want to kill someone. a kid ran out infront of me, lucaly a saw him and stopped in time. now i use $20 dollar swords to practice. nothing wrong with a wall hanger.

'til it breaks and hurts some one think of the damage a throwing knife does now imagine a sword blade sailing through the air with a mind of it's own

You think so now. But wait till it breaks! It is like walking on thin Ice. It may not break now, but it will eventually. Not to mention it is also probably more dangerous.

While I agree with you about how a $400+ sword can become a wall hanger, I'd argue the wisdom of using a $20 sword for anything other than very, very light practice (IE you don't swing it too hard and absolutely don't hit anything with it...) ROFL new guy 952350

The term wallhanger doesn't mean you can hang it on a wall, but it refers to swords that should only be on a wall and nothing more. You know, for display.

LOL OK guys, you are welcome to your opinion, however I think you should know that your definition of the word 'Wall Hanger" is not necessarily that of the majority... You may use the term as you wish, but keep in mind that others may not be thinking of the same thing you are when you use it in that fashion... Just a friendly heads up... Very Happy new guy 952350

Yes, don't fixate on my definition of "Wallhanger".
I was just saying a wallhanger shouldn't be used, but is not necessarily of no value .
