| Hi everyone, my name's Mark, I'm 31, and I've been lurking for a while to get feel for the site as I like to know what I'm getting myself into before jumping in, I guess you know the old saying "Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance"... Well, I finally got around to signing up. I work with special effects and props for movies and theatrical plays as well as LARP, and occasionally firework shows (yes, I have the license), although that last one isn't my main source of income, but more or less something I do mostly because I enjoy it.
So far I haven't been building Xiphoids, but I have always been tinkering with odd gadgets and weird contraptions, so I guess I was destined to end up in the business I'm in, and as I always hunger for new knowledge, it's no big surprise I ended up on this fine site, either. I mean, lots of what you people do is more or less the same as I do, and a pro should always seek out inspiration and so on.
As I know you people like to see proof of claims and not just accept every claim as the truth, I'll see what I can dig up of projects I still have lying around and post some pics, but I'm on my way to work right now, so that'll be when I get back.
Besides my work, I keep a decent collection of birdeating spiders (most of you probably know them as Tarantulas, although that's not the correct term), as well as a couple of Pythons, I fish, used to play a boatload of airsoft (need to build a new rifle), and on occasion take my metal detector for a walk.
Well, that's about it, looking forward to getting to know you all, helping out, and learning something new.

| SFX Hello Mark, Great to have you here! Sounds like you have done quite a bit...always nice to have cool jobs! We would love to see what you've done. It's not so much that we want claims of proof, it's that we are picture whores! We just love seeing pictures and drawings, parts and prototypes, finished goods...it's just that we all love crazy gadget/weapons/ect and we want to see how it may be made. I'd much rather see pictures in ANY and ALL post from everyone. That's what I think we all want is to look at cool stuff and read about it, not just reading. On the other side of that, we aways enjoy reading great post. Nice pets. I used to have a couple of Nile Monitor lizards, Iguanas, and many other lizards. I liked having little Dragons. So...what is the best thing you found with the metal detector? And what kind of prop have you made? : : | |

would like to know that as well, my brother had a metal detector. Other then an old watch and some change he never really found much. But that was 15 - 20 years ago, I'm sure the detectors of today are a lot better and more sensitive. I know I said this on your SFX post but "great work, nice pics" Anyway, glad to have you aboard.

Anyway, glad to have you aboard. Hi Toedash, thanks. :) I mostly do beach hunting, but I've also searched a spot where the military had a fort some 150 years ago. The only thing I found was an old rusty padlock, and a dummy rifle cartridge we haven't used here in the last 30 years or so. It had a wooden dowel inserted, the part that would've been sticking out to make up the projectile had rotted completely away. One of my best finds is a silver plated necklace, I found it on a beach that'd been used by the public for around 100 years, although the necklace isn't nearly as old. It was partially covered in roots, and you can see the surface is a bit fucked after having spent a few years at least, in the sand. Found a good deal of old coins in the same area, but nothing really valuable. The best find I've made so far is a gold plated necklace, I found this one only about 5 cm down in a new area of a beach I'd hit several times before, located a bit away from where the most people go. I'd just calibrated the detector and walked some 8 meters when I got a solid hit about a meter or so from the water, the detector gave off a nice stable tone and the target ID indicator told me it could possibly be gold. When I find a shallow target I usually just sweep the sand aside with my foot instead of using my trowel. The depth indicator said "1-2 inches down", at the first sweep of my foot I uncovered the pendant lying right side up, and could immediately see I'd struck something good. As I always do when I find something valuable, I combed the surrounding area within a couple of meters, but I don't think I found anything else. Here's a pic (also posted in the props thread), but what the hell... The ear ring could possibly be worth a bit too. The silver necklace has been washed and scrubbed, it was almost corroded into a solid clump of metal and sand, but the gold necklace looks exactly like the day I found it, gold might lose its shine, but doesn't really corrode even in salt water

| Hi Mark, I had initially joined this forum to gain insight and help in developing a bladed weapon prototype that I intended to see put to use on the big screen. The sword idea I have is pretty unique (I have yet to see it, although once i share the idea I may find myself disapointed to find out otherwise) and my thoughts are that in the hands of a trained weapons expert, it will provide for some pretty exciting onscreen action.
Now that I have the prototype completed I am looking for that expert, to develop a video for demonstration purposes. Once done, I need to get the video and prototype in front of the right person or persons for consideration.
I am finding this portion harder than making the prototype.
Being in the weapons/film biz, can you provide any suggestions?
Thanks! | |

| Hi Ken, I'd say it's a tricky one.
I think I'd see if I could get in contact with some independent film makers, as "you've got to have a name" to be noticed by the big companies. They may not have a whole lot of cash, but it's a place to start; unfortunately you don't make a movie based around a kickass sword, but order a kickass sword when you need it, and more often than not they've already decided what that sword should look like, at least that's been the case with the last 15-20 swords we made where I work.
Perhaps it could work if you could track down someone from the martial arts or stunt community, who've been used before, they never have the final word regarding exactly how the fight scene should be shot, but if they can come up with an idea/display something extraordinary that haven't been seen before, it's not impossible they'd be listened to next time someone decides to use them in an action film.
I know it's not much, but getting a special weapon featured because it's special, isn't easy unless you're some big-shot in the industry.

| Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it.
Wanna make a movie? :)
Once I get my video made I'll try and shop it around. I may take Sinza's advice (at least I think it was his idea) and make a short film and post it on u Tube.
Maybe someone of merit will see it and pick-up the idea.
I am not all that interested in making big bucks (although I'd take it if it same), as i am just seeing the idea make it. That, along with credit, 2 sets of whatever got produced for the film plus, and passes to the world premiere, plus any royalties from after market sales....... yea, right. I can dream can't I?

| XIPHOIDS | Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of weapons with a blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband/bracer sheath. Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and the Pata, punching swords with the blade sitting inline with the users fist.. |
Doers and Talkers | There's two kinds of people in this world when you boil it all down.
You've got your 'talkers' and you've got your 'doers'.
Most people are just talkers, all they got is talk. But when all is said and done, it's the doers who change this world. And when they do that, they change us. And thats why we never forget them...
So which one are you? Do you just talk about it or do you stand up and do something about it? Because believe you me, all the rest of it is just bullshit. |
