PostSubject: Hello, I'm Magnum   April 10th 2009, 9:41 am

Hello, I'm Magnum(cooler than my real name). I'm 26. I have a degree in mechanical design, but I'm currently not at a job that incorporates that skill. So I find stuff that I like to figure out in my spare time.

One current interest being the hidden blade from Assassin's Creed. Over a year ago or so I had made my mind up to create a working model out of common techniques and materials used in the game's intended timeframe. When I figured out that it was near impossible to do so I went with a more modern approach. I figured an OTF design was needed, but I'm still open to ideas. I kept hitting snags in the design process so I dropped it for awhile. With the teaser of AC2 coming out, I seem to have a renewed interest. That interest led to a Google search which lead me here.

I'm still new to all the jargon I've seen on this site thus far. I'll apologize ahead of time if I don't know what some things mean and have to ask for a more involved explanation. I do try to do as much research as I can on stuff I don't quite understand before I ask questions. I've been a moderator on another site for almost two years now so I understand the frustration of answering repeated questions when the answer can be found through a small amount of effort. I also understand that searches don't always yield the best results and a guiding hand is sometimes more useful.

Anyway, hope to find the answers I came looking for and perhaps help others find answers of their own.

A mechanical designer?!?! SWEET!!! cheers

Magnum Glad to have ya!!! Welcome

We have many post that deal with the idea, so you may have to look at what design you think looks the best.
I still think the Double Action Out-The-Front switchblade is still the way to go with a bit of redesign. I have post that show how it all works with pictures.

I'd love to have some back and forth with ya to get a working design. Don't worry about asking questions, we're all pretty cool with helping you out.

Great to have ya here!!! Hope you enjoy.

Thanks guys.

@Sinza - I actually looked over that thread I think you're talking about. I actually downloaded the same PDF of that patent for the DAOTF a while back. I'll take another close look at it when I get a chance. Perhaps there's something that can spark a new idea for my design.

I've got access to Autodesk Inventor and I can translate a few different file types if there's anyone here that works with similar programs. Just putting that out there.

Edit: Ok...I really wish I had found this site a year ago. Already found ideas like mine and better. I might be able to finish my design now.

Welcome !
a mechanical designer, who uses autodesk Inventor...
I hope you'll save some screen captures in jpeg to post.

I just got access to Inventor, but don't have many hours on it yet.
I have had autocad 2007 since '07 , been using Autocad since 1988 (Ver 9)
but still prefer autocad 2000, with my iges and LISP routines
I do 3d solid modeling all the time, on two monitors, one is split 4 screens,
I think acad2000 is much faster and more powerful,
and I regularly convert directly to surfcam, for CNC machining.
I only use 2007 to open files from more modern clients
who don't save down to older file types.
Once in a while I use 2007 for the 3d organic sweep command
and I'm just now learning nondestructive sectioning commands.

I keep seeing people doing Pro-E, and autodesk Inventor
for the parametric modeling, but they don't seem to utilize it well.
they all talk it up like the salesman's pitch, but it seems to take so long.
And I have yet to see anyone linking blocks together
where you change one part, and the other part alters automatically.
(I don't know how to do that, and can't find anyone to explain it to me)

I guess I'm waiting for an epiphany, I am still un-enlightened.

It's difficult to explain unless you're explaining it for a certain use. I'm trying to think of an example right now, but I can't think of a good one.

My work right now only requires me to utilize AutoCAD for all of our drawings. I just fiddle on Inventor anymore. I use it to try and realize some of these types of projects. It's a really under-utilized program as far as of what it's capable...in 3D. As far as making 2D drawings are concerned, I'd pick AutoCAD any day. We're on version 2009 right now. Wink

Once I get some better designs made up, I'll be sure to post some renderings. Very Happy

Hey Magnum,

Welcome Aboard!! I'm actually also working on a practical DA OTF Xiphoid design. Or a simpler redesign, actually, I came up with one that was just way too horribly complex. But I'm really Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. :)

And as Sinza said, ask anything you like, we're all pretty cool about that, especially if it may result in someone actually building something cool... Very Happy

Don't mind him. He's just out German Vampire with a bit of spelling/translation problem.
He post some killer pictures and topics...and he's pretty much harmless.(I think)
The translations comes out a little screwy sometimes, but we can usually figure out what he's trying to say.
Sometimes his 'guy' comes out as 'gay'....but he's only after your neck, not your dick.

Welcome aboard Magnum! Great to have you here and I promise not to exploit your mechanical design experience to......meh I can't promise that. lol anywho welcome to the forum buddy. Oh and like SINZA said you shouldn't worry about Bluttgott. German translates funkier than japanese so like he said, it comes out a bit garbled. I also recommend spraying anything you got with Deet in it on your neck....don't ask ROFL
