well im new here and dont know that much about knives i was wondering if theres anything i should know about them?

and what are some good begginer projects?

also anybody in the bay area ,CA know of any good knife shops

It's what strikes your interest, and doesn't upset your parents.
When I was 13, I hammered nails into miniature swords.
later, I found junk knives and fixed handles.
I made throwing spikes and practiced against a log section.

Every year that went by, I learned more and more.
but you have the advantage of the internet.

So Remember the movie Jurassic park, and don't create a monster
before you know how to control it.

Welcome to the forums! If you are just interested in knives, I would start with a small knife making project. Start with a sketch of a small, simple knife design. Once you are happy with that, transfer it to a piece of cardboard and cut it out. If you are happy with that, then transfer that to a peice of aluminum and cut that out. Then learn how to make and attach scales to it.

This is a simple thing, and working with aluminum is admittedly much easier than with steel, but you'll still learn a lot of the basics that way. But do heed Jerry's advice. Don't do anything that might upset your parents... Very Happy

Books. I can not stress enough how much you can learn from books. Get a few books on knifemaking and see if it's something you really want to do. It's not easy, it's a lot of work, but the results are priceless.

Design on paper, transfer to cardboard. No reason to waste metal if your cardboard knife isn't what you want it to be.

Plenty of good books out there, check Amazon or Barns and Nobels for their used books. Well worth the money spent!!!

Start simple. Make a few simple knives before you even think of doing anything automatic. Switchblades are cool, but a bugger to build and make work right!

Another good thing to try is finding things and making weapons out of them...
You will soon realize that anything can become a weapon.

I liked to start out small like hammering nails into miniature knifes, but I became
much too bored with that approach and started making knifes, arrows, swords, axes and
the like from regular pieces of extra steel. Before you start that however, I strongly
suggest you start up some wood-working, this will help you with all ranges of weapons you
make.

Reading helps!! I definitly suggest reading some weapon history books and watch how the
different types of weapons were created as technology and resources changed.

Just ask questions if you need help with what your building, thats what we are here for.
