XIPHOIDS
Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of bladed weapons with a dagger blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband or bracer sheath.
Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and similarities to the Pata, short punching swords with the blade sitting above the user's knuckles.
The Weapon Class of Xiphoid has also expanded to include Wrist Spikes, Wrist Mounted Guns, Flamethrowers, and pretty much any weapon mounted on a hidden or visable wristband.

O.K.....We have our various designs for armblades....and we seem to have a fairly good idea about these wrist flamethrowers...

Just like chocolate and peanut butter.

If the blades shoot out or are retractable or whatever, I believe I know a way it could be done.... You would need a groove on the blade (two would be better it doesn't matter) then in the groove put fire paste.

I think that would give it the flaming effect. youd just need some sort of ignition system to light 'em up...

Hmm fire paste in the fuller of the blade and perhaps a sparker like those used to start camp fires. When the blade is extended it drags accross a striker and ignites the paste. The paste is a great idea as I doubt it would get hot enough to hurt the temper in a blade, my only worry would be how to put it out, or devising a way to extinguish the blade when it is sheathed. sounds cool to me. well of course it does its a flaming xiphoid!

Putting it out... If the blade casing was made air-tight and of non flamable materials, retracting it may put it out. Like covering a candle. Not enough air to keep it burning. Or you could just let it burn out...

As for any risk of the blade temper being damaged, if it was fancy enough it could be made out of two metals, with the inner area with the fuller made out of something more heat resistant. It would be usefull to know how hat that stuff gets...

Interesting. I remember seeing a sword that was on fire. I suppose the handle could been filled with lighter fuel, and have the outside of the handle made that those long grilling lighters (with trigger and safety switch). The blade wouldn't be very strong, as you would have to have it tunneled out for the fuel to travel through to the edges and tip.

Have the lighter portion rigged to release the pressurized fuel and BAM

I'm thinking blade quality titainium as it does not need heat treating the heat will not damage the blade as as a steel blade.

.....but to tell the truth it would only matter if the flame was on the blade long enough to heat it up to a temp higher than it was treated at.

I would like to make a combo xiphoid, I've said this before.
If I were doing this I'd just build it with the wrist flamethrower that we see people building.
Even if I were to dump the whole tank at once I doubt it would really do much to the blade.
And as it's just a toy that probally wouldn't be cutting anything but air it really woudn't matter much anyways.
I would not make the blades shoot out. Ballistic knives are high prison time.
DO NOT MAKE BLADES THAT SHOOT.
