XIPHOIDS
Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of bladed weapons with a dagger blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband or bracer sheath.
Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and similarities to the Pata, short punching swords with the blade sitting above the user's knuckles.
The Weapon Class of Xiphoid has also expanded to include Wrist Spikes, Wrist Mounted Guns, Flamethrowers, and pretty much any weapon mounted on a hidden or visable wristband.

Ironically, I ran across this today...

The description on CollectorsEdge.com says this is a fixed blade. However looking at the way it has been constructed, it looks like a fixed blade prop of a retractable bladed movie weapon. I actually haven't seen the movie, so I am not sure if that is the case or not, but I thought the twin carrier rail approach was interesting, though possibly prone to binding. This is definitely going on my blog at some point, but thought It'd be cool to share here... :)

Don't take this the wrong way buddy, but if I could hug you I would! cheers

Dude! This is SWEET! Shocked

I'm buying it, says that they will be available end of next month and we just got our Xmas bonus, I'm BUYING IT!!! bounce $150...Mine!!!!

If it won't retract I'll take it apart and rework it. I've thought about rails, but I'll be honest and say I do more thinking than building.

This looks like it really could be something that we could work off of and take some design ideas from.

AS SOON as they are available I'll get one and we'll review it. Blade, you just made my day!

Here's a little somethin'somethin' for you, I know how you are about ninjas.

You always find the coolest stuff!!!

I couldn't help myself, I had to fiddle with it and see what it looked like closed. Little time in paint and I came up with this.

Now it's really easy to see how it all works. The lever that runs up the side makes the back rod pivot, which lifts the hook. This allows the springs on the sides to pull the blade assembly forward. I don't yet see how it locks open. Nice design, a little bulky, but over all A+. It gives me all kinds of ideas on how to streamline it more and change the opening lever.

Yet again only one way. I would assume you just pull it back manually by grabbing the slider part of the blade assembly slide back until the hook catches.

I can't wait until I can get one!! bounce Now i'm going to have to draw up some redesigns for this model too.

LOL Dude... You crack me up... Laughing

Sinza came from Ninja? That's just priceless...

I have another version of this ninja pic, except with a different background, but this one looks cooler. THX!! Very Happy

Nice work on the Saw blade photochop btw. I was thinking the rails were a bit short, but it was hard to be sure from the pic. Yeah, it's one way, very cool lever activated latch too, though not very safe! affraid And given that this is a prop, they may not have bothered with a blade locking mechanism for when it's open. However, that should be easy to fix, and either way, they have provided an interesting platform to work with. It's the first time I've seen this particular design. Definitely post up when you get it! Should be fun... Twisted Evil

Im simply amazed that they would actually sell something like this to the public. they must be half stupid to think noone is going to modify this to be used fully.

But hey! at least they show basically how it works. im happy about that.

Bad news: The SAW Gauntlet blade is not going to be sold by Collectors Edge.

It was gone so I asked and here's the email I got.

"This particular item have been taken off from our website because we can not order it from our supplier. They stop the productions of it for unknown reasons. We do not of any other company beside us that was going to have this item available."

They had to make a few and they need to sell those somewhere. Keep your eyes open guys, I want one of these things!!

I still haven't found one of the props for sale...I know I will some day!! But I found this!!

.............................................................................................................................................
This is a beautiful, limited edition, poster of the original blueprints. ***** The second picture listed is of the original blueprints with the original Stiletto device sitting on top of the blueprints. ***** I was in charge of the Mechanical Special Effects for the movie " SAW ". After meeting with the director [ James Wan ] and writer [ Leigh Whannell ] we came up with this HIDDEN SPRING LOADED ARM STILETTO for the character JIGSAW to have up his sleeve.. THE metal one in the second picture is the original used by the actor in the original movie "SAW". Its what he used to cut Danny Glovers characters throat with. So many SAW fans and horror prop collectors have asked in the past few years if I would build another one for their collection, I declined. When collectors saw the blueprints they asked if I would sell them too. It just didn't seem right to let one person with big bucks get my originals or print hundreds of thousands on cheap paper and sell them in every store that sells posters, so we came up with this. These are beautiful 24"x36", high quality posters. ****THERE ARE ONLY 96 AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME...THIS IS A FIRST EDITION**** UNLIKE my other blueprints *****THESE ARE NOT SIGNED OR NUMBERED, THEREFORE THEY ARE NOT PRICED EQUALLY****

...................................................................................................................

The one I'm getting is the colored aged one, I'd like to get a copy of the clean one. So I enlarged it.

scratch ??????? ....It's different... A lot different...This looks like it was built around a drawer slide. The rails and the release hook are also different.
As soon as I get my copy I'll let you guys know what I learn from it. Wish it showed it closed.

SWEET!!...

Maannn... it is really different... And the rails look really funky... Don't actually see why you'd need both drawer slides and rails though. Nice find nonetheless!!! thumb up Can't wait to see the tear down... bounce Twisted Evil

Q: Hi Tom ! Nice Work ! I wanted to ask you if the actual knife prop can be built from your Blueprint? Mar-09-08

A: Hi. If your really good with your hands, yes. The blade was shaped with a sanding belt, then a buffing wheel. The other parts were mostly shelf items. Springs, steel rod, a draw glide, and a shin guard the only other thing fabricated besides the blade was the hook mechanism and thumb trigger. Thanks. Tommy B.

..................................
So...from the mouth of the man who made the original....
Someone had asked him this question so I figured I'd place this here. I have e-mailed him, he is the one coming out with the fixed bladed version. He said they are held up at the moment. I'm trying to get more info.

I ordered the bluprint, so it should be here in a week or so. Looks like I get #1...I know it's not numbered, but I was the first to order one.

OK, I'm getting a itch to build another one of these, but a real nice one. I have some blades ordered. I'll be making my own leather gauntlet, lace up the outside forearm. Thinking about putting a spike and one of the magic flamethrowers into the design too.

But here's what I wanted to throw out there....I'm doing drawings and I'll be building a really nice version soon, in a few weeks.
I'd like to see any other ideas you guys have to make this better or better looking. I want to cover the blade when retracted, so it will have a box/case of some sorts.

What I'm thinking is this...look at all the crazy fantasy weapons out there... something with that kind of design.
What would this look like if Kitt Rae designed it? I'll have to go back over all the crazy stuff on Phyreblades blog and steal some design elements.

It's one of the torture traps from the SAW movies. Basically when a timer runs out it opens up ripping your mouth/head apart.
I'll send you some pics of what Tommy B had on his ebay page. There was a $100 blueprint of this device you could buy. I'm glad the armblade designs were only $30. I guess my blueprint comes with a picture of this beartrap on the back. The page is gone but I grabbed the pictures a few days ago. When i get around to putting them in the bucket I'll send them to ya.

Someone here asked if they could add a post with the different SAW traps. I said no.
Kinda like the ground up glass blinding powder...these are not things you can 'play' with.
As someone who had to grow up with abuse I have Zero tolerence for torture 'entertainment'.

Yeah...had him for years. I meet a gal who made custom dolls once and I was going to have her make one for me, this was back when the movies were new. Lost contact with her and it never happened...about 15 years later they came out with action fgures.
He's a little smaller than he is in the movie, but at least I have one. He's usually hanging by his hook somewhere in my place..he moves around a lot. :)

AHHHH YES!!!!!

Finally!!! I've been waiting over a year for this. Ever since Phyreblade showed me that first picture I knew I had to have one.
Damn...I think that was one of the first post on this forum.

BITCHES!!!!! In my fucking hands!!!! xiphoid blade

O.k.......here's the low down..... Bad Ass Fucking Cool!!!

Took me whole 30 seconds to take it from 'fixed blade' to 'spring activated'.
I knew it when I first saw the pictures...it looked like it was all there, looked like it would work without changing too much.
That's why it was so easy for me to build one.

It's got a great snap to it!!! CA CHINK!!!! Kick ass!!! Aluminum blade...who cares? I'm not going to do more than play with it.
I'll say this....the 'bracer' or whatever they call it is just worthless crap. Cheap thin plastic and foam. Took only five minutes for it to get a crack at one of the mounts. I can see I'll have to fabricate a new armband for this. You can't even really strap it on. The strap is WAY too big and cheap elastic/velcro. I'm thinking leather and steel!

Here it is...comes in a box that is nice and red 'velvet' lined....but the support that holds the blade was already breaking when I opened it. Cheap pressboard...I may have to re-make parts of this too if I want it to be strong.

See that bolt? Take it off and it's rock n roll!!! I was in such a hurry I didn't take a picture of it in place....but you get the point.

Here's the front in the open position.

And the back end. So simple yet so beautiful....

The front....You can see how the springs are attached. Fairly simple. And the back underneath. How it's all held together.

Here's the front lever pivot, the one part one this that's welded. They put a nice little ramp at the back to make setting the hook easier.

Let me know if you have any questions.
All I can say is this....both this 'SAW Gauntlet Stiletto' and the 'Assassin Extension Knife' were about $150.
Well worth it. If you guys want armblade...buy these WHILE YOU CAN. Next year they might all be gone!!

slice Kick Ass :SINZA:

Yes. It really was that easy to modify. eddie It's just one bolt that makes it a fixed blade.

You all know what this means?!?!?!?! dunno

Something I have thought about from the time I first saw this....

Spring loaded bladed weapons/toys can be made, sold, and shipped through the mail TOTALLY LEGAL if you just put in one bolt to fix the blade in the open position and call it a 'fixed blade' design. cheers cheers cheers
Then, just like me, the people who buy it can just take off the restraining bolt and you're good to go automatic style. thumb up

That changes a lot.

That means that you or me could make armblades and sell them and not have to worry about it.......nice

yep, perfectly legal.

Until the first time some idiot takes out the screw, sharpens the blade, and goes out to recreate his favorite movie scene.

Sorry to rain on your parade, really. But I just don't think it'll be long before the lawyers and the politicians make this illegal to.

I hate people like that. (lawyers and politicians and the idiots that make them necessary.)

I hope i'm not about to revive an old topic, but i thought this would be the best place to ask.

I just got my Saw Gauntlet not too long ago and it seems that the back hinges with the hook that hold the blade into place don't hold still on the bars they are set on when you fire the blade. The worst part is that the gauntlet came this way and i'm not sure if it's meant to.

The fall off the back and at the moment the hook doesn't even lift when the hand trigger is pulled.

Has anyone else had a problem of this nature with this item and if so, how did you fix it?

Do you mean the hook just rotates around the horizontal bar?

If so, then some JB Weld should fix that no problem. Just set it while its in the locked position to get a correct fit.

Get a Allen wrench and tighten down everything. Maybe a drop of glue to keep the hook in proper position before you tighten it down,
And you can't complain....it's supposed to be a fixed blade...remember. You're not even supposed to take that bolt off so it slides back.

Gotta remember people....IT"S NOT A WEAPON....IT'S A DISPLAY OBJECT. It's meant to look cool on the wall, and that's it.

Wasn't meant to be worn, played with, or brought into battle. It's only meant to be in the display box and be a cool item.

So...if it's falling apart...remember that it's not meant for playing....you'll loose parts.

Accept it for what it is...it's a display prop. Nothing else.
But it does give you a great example of WHAT TO BUILD and how to make it BETTER. ...hint hint.... :SINZA:

p.s. If you have any issues or problems let me know and we'll see what we can do. We'll make it work!

All he's done is seen Sinza's vid an rather than tellin' whoever buys one "oh yeah, btw if you take out the centre retaining bolt an add a coupla springs you can have a "working" version of this prop".

NOOOOO what he's done has prolly started a law to make even props illegal now, wouldnt mind but he's only makin' an extra $10 or whatever so whats the fuckin point in advertising it and attracting such unwanted attention from the authorities? Rolling Eyes jerkin Rolling Eyes

Is it me or is that as sensible as a Gunsmith sellin AKs converted to FA to a Civillian where they are mostly outlawed?

YES they can be converted but coz of the Legality you wouldnt risk your livelyhood over one.....would you? scratch

NO, what you would do if you felt like "enlightening" the buyer (an obviously credited him/her with the Savvy to undertake the conversion) you would simply "advise" them on how to do so, NOT get your own hands dirty!

Sinza arse is covered because he is not a seller/manufacturer of these items, simply someone who purchased one an decided to tinker with it, then present a detailed presentation showing how easy it was to convert, oh an what an arse the Law is too!
Wink

Ohhhhh praps im bein a bit OTT but thing is i love this place an you Guys an the last thing i'd want to see would be this forum locked an us Mods in trouble for runnin an Academic Network, which is basically what it is, for our appreciation of Exotic Automatic Wrist Weaponry (there prolly not clued up enuff yet to know the correct term Rolling Eyes )

Dont get me wrong i aint sweatin, i dont have nuffin dodgy around me these days, its too risky, i might buy a few vintage knives every now an then, but when i get "bored" with them i send them on to a collector Pal o'mine to lock away for a Decade or two, best way these days, ''specially in the UK at the minute with all the knife crime from the youngsters!
