XIPHOIDS
Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of bladed weapons with a dagger blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband or bracer sheath.
Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and similarities to the Pata, short punching swords with the blade sitting above the user's knuckles.
The Weapon Class of Xiphoid has also expanded to include Wrist Spikes, Wrist Mounted Guns, Flamethrowers, and pretty much any weapon mounted on a hidden or visable wristband.

Hi Guys!!!

I've recently joined the group and have slowly been reading every post. I'm most impressed with what I've seen. Very informative.

I'm recently working on a replica of the arm device worn by Benicio Del Toro in the James bond film LICENSE TO KILL, He flicks it out a few times during the film.

While making it I remembered a toy I had as a kid (which probably Hooked me into retractable arm devices) It was a Hubley Panther Derringer arm device. THe only drawback was it swug open like a mousetrap instead of sliding down.

Anyone remember any other toys like this? I'm sure there were...

Like the forearm dirk... nice touch. Simple and easy to make. I actually do not recall seeing many xiphoids when I was a kid. This is probably a good thing, as I would probably have gotten myself into a whole lot of bad trouble... Very Happy

ed209 WELCOME!!

Nice toy you made there!
* how is the action? Does it work well?
*Does it lock in the open or closed position?
* If you were to design and build another what would you change or do different?

Thank you for the pictures!! The best pics I've seen of the Panther Pistol. Very nice!

I looked at the spyguys sight, cool stuff!!

Great to have you here! Hope to see more cool stuff!!

Hi Sinza,
Thanks!!! I'm glad to be here. Great stuff by all. VERY innovative designs and informationm.

The action worlks very smoothly but is tight enough that it is friction held in place until you flick the wrist. There are no locks either open or closed position.

I certainly WILL do another as this piece is primarily for display purposes and does not have to work at all as it will be begind glass at the "Cars of the Stars Motor Museum / James Bond Museum" in Keswick, UK. www.thebondmuseum.com

The gentleman who owns the museum has amassed an incredible collection of Bond vehicles and props. those he can't get...I've replicated for him.

The 2nd one I'll attempt will have to retract the blade much further back towards the elbow and need to slide out much further into the hand. I will also make it spring acuated similiar to the arm device made by Tim Smythe for the original Wild Wild West TV show.

I've spoken with Tim at length and even added one of his arm devices to my collection.
I'll shortly post pictures of it with the modifications I've made to it.

Thanks for taking a peek at my website.
By the way...my website is TheSpyBoys.com....NOT SpyGuys.

Trust me...I'm NOT being a jerk or anything. The reason I mention it is that someone once contacted me to let me know that if you type in SpyBoys.com ( leaving out THE from the name) it takes you to a Gay website.....Not that they're anything wrong with that as Jerry Seinfeld would say.

I've been making SPY related props for several years so Xiphoids fit right in.
If you get a chance, Google my name. Type in: ED MAGGIANI YODA SABRE
and you'll find I developed and constructed the Lightsaber used by Yoda in the Star Wars prequel films along with a fellow propmaker.
Of course, they used a computerized version of my design but you can see my actual sabre in the book THE STAR WARS VISUAL DICTIONARY by my good friend, Dr. David West Reynolds.

Enough about me,,,,we take you now to your regularly scheduled program.....
Thanks again
Ed
