XIPHOIDS
Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of bladed weapons with a dagger blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband or bracer sheath.
Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and similarities to the Pata, short punching swords with the blade sitting above the user's knuckles.
The Weapon Class of Xiphoid has also expanded to include Wrist Spikes, Wrist Mounted Guns, Flamethrowers, and pretty much any weapon mounted on a hidden or visable wristband.

Okay so heres my idea. Take the same design used in Sinza's "Saw Gauntlet Forearm Blade" and extend to your knuckles. Take the lock and add a second part to it thats attached to a door-henge type metal flap thing. opening the lock will release the claws and lock them in place at the end by having the metal flap thing fall into a groove on the claws. This lock will be on a compression spring to hold it down. I'm not going to spring-load the claws on this for safety/control reasons, i'll have them gravity fed. Also, if I have good control of the flap thing then I should be able to control the speed on which the claws come out. Lifting the flap all the way up will let the claws come down at the normal speed but easing up on the flap slowly should cause friction against the top of the claws and have them come out slowly or stealthily. Also, i am going to have the peice of metal the claws are attached to set UNDER the bars so the claws are set under the flap.

Here is my blueprint. The dark grey is the base/mounting plates. the brown squares are the 2-way and 3 way nickel. the big brown rectangle near the front is the 'flap' and the red is the threaded rod or locking mechanism. The turqouise blue color is obviously the claws. I didnt draw in the compression spring on the lock. I just realized that as im typing and i dont feel like redoing it so just imagine its there. Notice the groove the flap fits into on the claws. so the lock in the back keeps it in place when retracted and the lock in the front that is linear to the back lock will keep them locked when extended.

This is a top and side view of the claws retracted and extended

So guys, help me find the flaws in my design before i build this motha

THANX MUCH!! I never could've got this far without you guys!!!

"LOL hand" FTW!!! rolling on floor lau

Well it fundamentally looks like it will work, though I'm no really following what the compression springs are doing and how your lolhand is actuating the latchss...

LOL You and text boxes have a little disagreement? Very Happy

I know these aren't exactly the same but when I saw your blueprints it reminded me of these homemade wolverine claws and youtube clip that are no doubt posted somewhere in this forum but to save time
here's a link

*Note that these are spring loaded and not gravity fed like your design*

yeah ive seen those before but i couldnt tell how his lock worked. and i read that he flexes his bicep in order to activate his claws. mine works by a pully set under the wrist. I would have a lock set up like sinza's saw blade but being that the claws extend to my knuckles, i cant bend my wrist.

@phyreblade
basically the compression springs are placed so when i pull the lock open in gets pushed back down. that way when the falp falls into the groove the compression spring keeps it in place. otherwise if i turned my arm upsidedown the lock would fall open. So yeah the compression spring just keeps the lock down when not being opened.

does that make sense? I suck at describing these things

May I ask why you've decided to extend it to your knuckles? Is it for more control over
the claws when you swing/stab with them?

Just in an idea but since you won't be able to bend your wrist to release the lock, why not add a strap or attached ring at the end that you can put your fingers through that will release the lock when you pull your fingers toward your palm like when you make a fist.

well ive extended it to my knuckles to get the most length i can from the claws. with the contraption reaching out to my knuckles i can almost get a full 12 inches of claws out but if it stops at the end of the wrist then i lose about 4 inches of length. And it also keeps by wrist reinforced for slashing and stabbing like you said.

As for the lock. if it opens by making a fist then i would have to keep my hand open when there 'in use'. otherwise if i went to punch someting they would retract back inside because the lock would be open. so if i just put a little pully under my wrist, all i have to do i reach down with my fingers (like a spiderman web slinger) and pull.

Hey does the sinz man have any input? I'd love to hear from him too for he is the all knowing

Update:

I decided i should make several sets of claws to fit on my 'contraption'. If the claws are simply bolted on then I think I should make them interchangeable. So i'm gonna make 4 types of claws to fit on my arm mount.

Classic Wolverine - 13" razor sharp and perfectly beveled blades

Wolverine 3000 - 13" razor sharp and perfectly beveled blades with added ridges, detail, serrations, and futuristic detail (cuts and holes)

First Century Wolverine - (havnt decided on length) Cut from wood and beveled into ridged imperfect and thick claws and painted white and light brown to look boney. perhaps blood painted on?

Party Wolverine - 13" dulled metal claws. No points or sharp edges. These would be for costume parties or halloween and what not in which no one should accidently be impaled. (like nate here)

Wutcha think? dwarf

Your schematics look awesome, but do you plan to make the lock for the claws "out" outside the main block (don't know how to call it, the "rail" where claws run back and forth)? Because it seems to me it might be dangerous, easily damaged in fights...or am I reading your drawings wrong?

Oh thats a good point. instead of the lock hanging over them, it should be set in front of the block so it cant snap off. your right if i was to punch something hard enough with these, that lock could pop right off
