| Hi guys, this is my first post, and all im after are some opinions, on what would be my first ever build. Ive had an idea for a xiphoid style baton, the idea being that it is conceled in the sleeve. now the idea im toying with at the moment, is retracting the baton with a motorised reel. so: -baton extends like most xiphoids, using a spring loaded mechinism -baton locks -baton is retracted using cable and electric reel. below is a VERY rough MSpaint drawn concept.(sorry about imgshack couldnt upload any other way) any input would be great, as far as tips, thoughts and ideas from you guys (the experts) so thanks in advance! | I like it, but it would be really tricky building a motor like that unless you used one from somewhere else. And, that motor would have to be pretty useful to justify the extra space and battery. | |

| A couple problems with your design, bro. Nothing major. I've used a lot of police batons and worked with them throughout my childhood, and I own a couple myself. -There's no locking mechanism shown. -You should probably have more than one section of the baton, because with that length it dousn't seem like you would be able to affectivly hit anything with it. In fact, I would have the actuall baton extend out on a shaft. The two are connected by a circular hinge. that way when the shaft extends, the baton will be at your hand, you'll have the freedom to move it with your wrist. Sorry if it's hard to explain, I'll try to get a sketch done and upload it. Cool? Looks cool, probably gunna have to build one myself. to the forum. | |

| yeah i see what you're saying there, thankfully its a rough idea, haha. im actually considering having the batons seperate (escrima sticks or the like) and having the xiphoid part more of a holder/extender for the baton to be grabbed out of. if that makes any sense.
feedback makes me want to start on it now, but alas i have neither time nor funds
thanks for the input, any more muchly welcomed.

thanks for the input, any more muchly welcomed. Yeah I get it. You know what would be pretty cool? A pop-out tonfa. Haha that'd be sick. Anyway, about the locking mech?

| yeah admittedly i avoided that question, im not too sure, I\'ll have to rethink it. i saw an interesting design using a CD drive, so maybe I\'ll look at that, extends retracts with touch of a button. ive got a bunch of old drives i can play with... too many things to think about this time of night. | |

| Haha I know right? I shouldn't be up this late. Or... early, as it is.
You could make it friction held, like most extendable batons do.

| Or you could just have the baton tethered, so that it pops out in your hand and basically dangles at the end of the cord. That gives you all the degrees of freedom you need to manipulate it, and to retract it, you pull the cord (either manually, by a spring-loaded mech, or electrically). That seems easiest to me... | |

| yeah i was thinking that at work last night, it would make for much easier use.
also friction locking is a decent idea, i hadnt considered that.

| XIPHOIDS | Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of weapons with a blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband/bracer sheath. Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and the Pata, punching swords with the blade sitting inline with the users fist.. |
Doers and Talkers | There's two kinds of people in this world when you boil it all down.
You've got your 'talkers' and you've got your 'doers'.
Most people are just talkers, all they got is talk. But when all is said and done, it's the doers who change this world. And when they do that, they change us. And thats why we never forget them...
So which one are you? Do you just talk about it or do you stand up and do something about it? Because believe you me, all the rest of it is just bullshit. |
