This was probably the most exhausting, but also the most satisfying and fun vacation week I ever had.

It took four days to build the cannon, and then one more day of basic filming with the great guys from http://www.tapefilm.de before we brought the cannon to its playground - Tobias's wonderful farm.

He drove the weapon to his romantic apple orchards, on the hottest day Germany saw in the whole year... and then we fired it. Fired it. Fired it some more. Did I mention that we fired it a lot? :)

The performance of this thing is amazing. We did not exceed the strength of 36 conventional "hunterband" catapults (18 times the draw weight and twice the draw length), as it was getting tough to cock the mechanism even though we used long crank handles.

See for yourself:

We had a blast that day, even added a full blown slingshot tournament with several different challenges in the evening. I drank less beer than Tobias and even half cheated in one discipline (couldn't resist), but he nevertheless beat me 94:91 - the guy is just a great shooter, hats off.

Now I will go back to my job, a big show next week. But I am much relaxed, having achieved something I started to work on like 9 months ago.

Ok, I have a challenge for you Jeorg my man, it's more of a catapult than slingshot, but have a go at building a smaller model of Da Vinci's Catapult, like they did on "Doing Da Vinci".

Fire something out of one of those, and I will bow down to you!

I am speechless. Imagine this in a medieval battle... Don't need a silly batteringram anymore now! Just unleash this on the door, and voila, done.

Jrg, you are an amazing dude. Please, for the love of everything, keep doing what you do, it's amazing Very Happy

Massive project Joerg. pirat

There are quiet a few guys out there building man powered artillery...recently a guy from the French crossbow forum stopped by to show some of his builds. I liked the guy very much, the man takes on everything (Rubber, coil springs, torsion springs, traditional and modern bows, ...).

Recently we were talking about a French crossbow replica he built a while back that uses rubber for power and overall functions very similar to your medieval crossbow styled slingshot. I kinda got interested in the concept, since it deals with some serious draw weight (500+ lb), but doesn't produce much speed (180fps w/ 44g arrow)...The obvious is the draw length is short, chunky steel components slowing down the system lots and lots...and probably a few more things...

I've lightened practically everything in the design to maximize performance, but it would be great to hear your thought on this "slingy-bow" pirat as well.

Spoiler:

I basically tried to position the rubber in such a way that it doesn't change the angle when drawn, possibly opening up a more direct access to the rubber's energy storage. Perhaps this is not the place and time to post this...if so, I will gladly keep the conversation over PM or a separate topic.

All Best,

Ivo

PS: Man powered artillery...haha...*almost forgot* WWI French grenade launching ballista Very Happy : http://thearbalistguild.forumotion.com/t353p30-coil-springs-as-power-source#3741
