I am currently in the process of making an eight shot slingshot gatling gun that is crank operated. Not so easy, but I hope to get it to work over the Easter days.
I have a "gatling" slingshot already, but it really is more like a single action revolver slingshot really.

That is what I am up to. More like eight rotating crossbows.

Joerg,
Why not build "one" that has consistent one inch groups at...well at least 40-50 yards?
I mean it's cool to shoot things that are 10 yards away and marvel at the power of the weapon, but what about greater ranges?

(Back to original topic) Sweet work there Joerg I very much enjoy watching your videos and love this sling shot design.
I think another cool Idea is to figure out a way to preload each shot so that all you have to do is pull a trigger and a shot is made. But on a new sling shot because there is nothing wrong with that one.
P.S. Keep up the good work and practice on that world record.

Yes, the idea of my eight shot one IS to have them preloaded and rotate it. I tried to power the rotation with a rubber band, but it was too weak to overcome the friction strong bands are causing.
The crank will rotate the eight preloaded crossbows, pushing the topmost loaded pouch over the notch so the shot falls.
Regarding the long range issue, slingshot balls have the disadvantage that there is no way I can think of that gives them spin (like bullets fired from a rifled barrel). Without spin, the balls are much more subject to wind and will stray.
Accuracy is pretty good for about 25 to 30 yards, which really is the longest distance I can shoot in my backyard. At the upcoming East Coast Slingshot Tournament, there is a 70 yard gong shot contest. Experts will hit the bottom of an oil drum with 20% of the shots (2 hits from 10 attempts).

Ok, here is a sneak preview to one of my coolest projects ever.
An eight shot slingshot crossbow that fires its shots in less than a second, ideally!
You preload the eight bands, then you turn the crank, which turns the "barrel drum". The topmost pouch and ball hits the post, which pushes ball + pouch upwards and the shot falls. You keep turning and the next shot falls... next... next... next.
It is mechanically functional, but I was too exhausted to complete it today. It is really as much work as making eight slingshots! I have to make eight bandsets and and and... for today, I just put on an old Thera Tube Green bandset I had lying around. Works fine.
Should be a lot of fun shooting it. Will do so over Easter.
PS: Sorry for the messy workshop, I already received orders from management (wife) to clean it up very soon :-)

Buddy, I respect Joerg and would not swerve off the topic.
What I'm talking about is this...

I'm currently discussing and planning a project with my guys that I will bust out as soon as we have a working solution for this long range/accuracy issue with low velocity projectiles shot out of slingshots/bow/crossbows.
So far we have excluded traditional rifling as the velocity is low enough already and rifling would make it even worse without giving even a marginal improvement in range/stability of the round.
However I brought up a system long known in painball/airsoft community known as "hop-up"...basically a setup which will induce "backspin" on the projectile creating what is known as Magnus Effect which is creates a difference in the pressure of air surrounding the projectile...without getting into a deep explanation of what Magnus Effect is, I can just say that it causes even the low velocity projectile to glide on the body of air - straightening out the trajectory and thus extending the range of the weapon.
What is an issue though...is that the weapon needs to be perfectly level for outstanding accuracy. This may be too much for this specific topic, but if it helps Joerg in any way and his inventor instinct kicks in high gear and he comes up with something not only cool, but also superseding the performance of all predecessor slingshots...then at least he'll have some one to blame.
Cool project Joerg and guys, don't get mad at me, I'm crazy about man powered projectile weapons and if I didn't have such a demanding job, I'd be here all day kicking ideas back and forth..
All Best,
Ivo

Have completed it today, came out great. I had to do some finetuning. like reshaping the transport wheel a bit to make room for larger ammo.
Have shot 20mm steel balls (.79") with it all afternoon, the only problem is that the fun is over so soon. It is amazing to see several steel balls in the air at the same time! The weapon needs less than a second to fire all eight rounds.
Accuracy is kind of poor when you fire handheld. Like all Gatling guns, this works better from a tripod. But there is this peculiar full auto feeling!
Will do the video on the morrow.

BRILLIANT! I was wondering if it got caught on loose bands while rotating, but apparently not. This is just so awesome.

Jessie Ventura nicknamed his Gatling Gun "Old painless." If you are gonna give it an alternative name, I suggest you call your Gatling Slingshot "Old Painful".

Hey Jorg, what happened to the ballistic gelatin?
That was always my favorite part of your vids, I would love to see what this thing would do to it.
Maybe do a special showcasing all your crazy slingshots and what they do to the gel.

Have you ever thought of using a drill or a small but powerful motor in replacement of your turn crank?

A motor would need quite some power, so it would be heavy, and the battery required as a source would add to the extra weight.
I tried rubber as energy source, but it did not work. The crank handle works fine, and is in line with the Gatling design anyway.
What I will look at next is a speed loading device for it. The way it works right now, it takes me about a minute to reload. If I can bring that down to 10 seconds, that'd be nice.
The video seems to go viral again, by the way!

Viral indeed! I even found you on WIN, a part of the Failblog sites.
Also known as a Retractable Forearm Dagger, Xiphoid is a class of weapons with a blade that is retractable into a forearm worn wristband/bracer sheath. Designed for swift and quick surprise attacks. It is notable for being evolved from the Katar and the Pata, punching swords with the blade sitting inline with the users fist..
There's two kinds of people in this world when you boil it all down.
You've got your 'talkers' and you've got your 'doers'.
Most people are just talkers, all they got is talk. But when all is said and done, it's the doers who change this world. And when they do that, they change us. And thats why we never forget them...
So which one are you? Do you just talk about it or do you stand up and do something about it? Because believe you me, all the rest of it is just bullshit.
